Premarin is the abbreviation of Pregnant Mare's Urine. It's taken by catheter from a pregnant mare kept in a stall until
she gives birth. It's then cultivated into the drug used to treat menopause in women.
Obviously to get the specific hormone from the urine the mare needs to be pregnant - the product being the foal that
is then later sold off for slaughter or hopefully adopted out to a family. Approximately 60,000 horses are slaughtered each
year because they don't find homes.
The slower demand for this drug and recent technology advances in being able to recreate the hormone synthetically has
meant even more bad news for the horses.
I'm by no means a "tree hugger" or "bunny lover" but this hurts me to think of these horses being treated this way. So
I have compiled a list of links to PMU rescue organizations and various other places that you can look at in the hopes of
finding these horses homes or just extra feed for the winter. Thanks for looking!!!
